Breña Baja

Breña Baja, south of Santa Cruz, lies 287 m below sea level and stretches out over 15 km sq. Its 4800 inhabitants are scattered across several small hamlets.

The centre of the community is San José, with its parish church dating from the 16th century.  The village has experienced an economic boost in the past 12 years with the establishment of the holiday centre Los Cancajos.

Los Cancajos: It is the largest holiday centre on the island with over 3000 beds, located not far from Santa Cruz and the airport. Noise from aricraft is limited, however.

Los Cancajos was created in the 1980s and today offers two larger black sand bays with sanitary facilities, changing cabins and rescue station. It was awarded the “blue flag” for water quality and cleanliness. Deck chairs and parasols (there are no shaded areas) are available for rental. Restaurants, cafes and shopping areas are to be found in the vicinity.

A bus travels every half hour between Los Cancajos, Santa Cruz and the airport.
