Tijarafe

The town is located 670 m above sea level in the northwest of the island. From the main thoroughfare, it does not appear particularly scenic.

The old town with its small cobblestone streets is located upside of the main street. Eight districts extend across 53 km sq., with about 3000 inhabitants.

The “devil’s festival” takes place once a year in Tijarafe, drawing in visitors from all parts of the island. A devil in human form frightens visitors and releases fireworks into the sky.

Tijarafe is also among the strongholds of the typical Canary sport “Lucha canaria”.

Sightseeing:

Iglesia de la Candelaria: The old parish church is located upside of the thoroughfare and is home to the Candelaria: A 16th century statue of the patron saint.

Casa del Maestro: The Casa del Maestro is located in the town centre in the Calle 18 de Julio, in which an ethnographic museum has been established. Primarily ceramics from pre-Spanish times are to be found here.
Opening hours: Mon-Fri 8:00-12:00. Free entry.

Centro Gastronómico: An old Canary building La Venta is located right next to the Casa del Maestro, in which agricultural products from the community are available for purchase. This centre receives public support and is intended to preserve the production of traditional foods and other articles, such as mojos, cheese, and wine.
Opening hours: Mon-Fri 8:00-12:00. Free entry.

Smugglers’ harbour: Below Tijarafe are located a large cave and bay, which offer the opportunity for swimming or fishing. Locals used to use the rock face to build provisional holiday homes. The path to the sea is demanding (with a slope of 600m), but well worth it.

Mirador El Time: Lookout point at about 600 m. A fantastic view of the Aridane Valley and the mountains is to be had here
